Its architecture separates transaction execution from data availability, aiming to lower costs while preserving compatibility with existing smart contract tooling.

The project addresses the tradeoff many blockchain networks face between scalability, cost, and privacy-preserving functionality. It combines a modular design with cryptographic tooling such as reusable circuits for identity verification and compliance checks, letting application developers integrate privacy features without building cryptography from scratch. This approach positions Manta as infrastructure for teams that need both EVM compatibility and zero-knowledge capabilities.

Manta Pacific, an Ethereum layer-2 network, is the project's flagship offering and supports EVM-compatible applications across decentralized finance, gaming, and enterprise use cases. The ecosystem previously included Manta Atlantic, a parachain focused on privacy-preserving identity credentials, though development and ecosystem resources are now consolidating onto Manta Pacific, with Atlantic winding down as a separate network. Manta is used by application developers, ecosystem partners, and a foundation-backed grant program supporting projects building on the platform.

This data is provided under two licensing models.

Model 1 - open data. The open data core is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) — a copyleft/share-alike license allowing free use, modification, and sharing for any purpose. Attribution is required: include "Powered by The Grid" linking to https://thegrid.id wherever the data is used. Derivative databases must be shared under ODbL terms. Trademarks, logos, and brand names (marked "Special TPIP") are not covered by the ODbL. For ML/AI use: training datasets that substantially extract ODbL data are Derivative Databases and must be shared under ODbL if publicly used; models must be attributed in documentation.

Model 2 - commercial licenses. The Grid Data Service (TGDS) is also available as a commercial license. See [Web Services Terms](https://about.thegrid.id/legal/web-services-terms) for commercial use that is not covered by the open data service.
